Seminar at Alif Dhaal Mahibadhoo

By Mohamed Malik - 02 Dec, 2010 15:16 PM - ID 12

We were invited to Mahibadhoo by the principle of the School Mr. Shamih Moosa. We sent invitations to all government and independent bodies in Mahidbadhoo.

We conducted the seminar at 20.00 hrs at the school hall, 23 women and 25 men from various government places turned up for the event.

Before the seminar began, the principle of the school spoke thanking us for coming down there in such notice.

As the first part of the seminar Mr. Mohamed Malik spoke and gave a presentation about the meaning of a copyright law and it's implications. He also highlighted about the three different softwares propieratory, free and open source and explained the differences between the three types of softwares.

Later he asked the participants whether they have read the end user lisence agreement and it was no suprise that no one has ever read it, considerding that they do there daily work while sitting infornt of a computer. Meaning while Malik continued his presentation based on opensource software and highlighting the economical factors related while trying to buy the propieratory software. After highlighting the differences between both he ended his presentation and made way for Naail.

Mr. Naail Abdul Rahmaan looked at things more practically. First he talked about the Linux desktop environment he also highlighted the differences in both in a much more practical way than Malik did. He spoke about OpenOffice.org and its differences compared to Microsoft office and he spoke about the various technical aspects of the Linux Operating system. He also highlighted that each and very person can contribute to free software and showed the examples of Zekr, tanzil and Ubuntu Translation Project.

After Naail, Mr. Adam Fathuhy spoke about the dangers of viruses, trojans, malware, spyware etc and the problems faced due to these security issues and how to protect against these. He also highlighted the fact that the Linux Operating system is less prone to these issues, since the fact that most of these do not run of Linux based systems and also spoke about the proven reliability and security of the Linux Operating system.

While the seminar was coming to an end we discussed the feed back forms and we got both positive and negative feedbacks. Almost all participants believed that the copyright law has it's implications and they will not be able to afford to buy software. However most participants said that we should hold seminars in a more practical approach meaning that hands on practice should be given since many of the them are not very technically proficient.
